The Trees:

Rosewood is a common name for many woods and trees, usually semi-tropical and tropical varieties. The fragrant wood and often red color inspired the name.

Bolivian Rosewood is found in Brazil and Bolivia and is similar to Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) which is found in the same area, but now endangered. Honduran Rosewood (Dalbergia, stevensonii) is also grown in South America.

Some Indian and African woods are commonly refereed to as rosewood.

The Wood:

Rosewoods usually have deep red and brown tones and beautiful grain making them ideal for furniture and musical instruments. Heavy, hard, and dense, rosewood is noted for its stability and resistance to rot.
