Alders are a group of fast growing shrubs and trees found in the Americas from Canada to Argentina. They pollinate by catkins in early spring, and are related to Birch Trees. Common types of Alder trees include the Red Alder and the Black Alder.
The wood from alder trees is white to golden brown in color with a tight uniform grain which takes readily to stains and finishing. It is commonly used in furniture manufacture, cooking (smoking), charcoal production, and it's bright tone is prized by makers of electric musical instruments.
