Artist Biography
For most of Paul's adult life he has had a passion for making furniture and elegant boxes. Educated as an electrical engineer, he has spent 30 years inventing technology used in today's computers and electronic storage systems. What started as a creative outlet led to designing and building fine custom hardwood boxes for wedding rings, handmade papers and fine jewelry for private collectors and craft galleries.
Paul was taught functional wood design from his father, a second generation master craftsman in Upstate NY. Paul creates his hardwood boxes with impeccable attention to detail. His work features matched grain patterns through the joints and lids, time proven joinery techniques and flawless finishing using a natural, low ECO impact oils composed of orange peel oil and beeswax. Internally the box features removable dividers, sliding trays and durable suede linings.
Paul prefers using native USA woods; predominately Pennsylvania Black Cherry from the Allegheny Plateau, Vermont Bird's Eye Maple from managed wood lots and reclaimed/salvaged Claro Walnut and Big Leaf Maple from the Pacific Northwest. The art of transforming a raw natural resource into a timeless functional object is the inspiration to Paul's creative process.
