Artist Statement
The departure point for my furniture and sculpture is the delineation of the silhouette. I visualize the piece not in wood but rather in a black, monolithic material. If the form has a visual impact in this black dress it will be that much more potent when endowed in wood or cast bronze.
I fabricate most of my work out of solid wood because it lends itself to the sculptural process while reinforcing my design approach. I feel that solid wood has more virility and intrinsic value than veneer.
The design foundation for my work is very instinctual and is based on both natural and man-made forms that I find pleasing. These nuances of forms range from leaves, flowers, butterflies and women to automobiles, machinery and architecture.
The aesthetic linchpins that power my work are passion and delicacy. I want my work my work to have mellifluous dynamic similar to a Beethoven passage that weaves melodic filigree out of molten steel.
