Exotic Wood Bowl by Paul Hinds

Compound Exotic Wood Goblet
7" x 5 3/4" with a high-gloss polyurethane finish.
I do these goblet shapes with significantly differing cross sections and this is one I found particularly pleasing - so much so that I gave it to my father for Christmas a couple of years ago. More details on this bowl, including a full layout of the woods used, can be seen at: g027

Artist Biography

I've had a long career in high tech and after slaving over a hot computer all day, I just LOVE to come home and sit surrounded by piles and boxes of exotic woods and think about which piece might go best on a bowl blank that I am building up piece by piece in a slow process of cutting and sanding and glueing that gets repeated over and over until I have something big enough to put on the lathe and turn down into a bowl.

My interest in exotic woods is such that I have created one of the most extensive internet sites in the world for information about them, including some 20,000 unique images of about 700 different species of wood (including American domestic woods along with the exotics); it's a non-commercial site and can be viewed at:

Wood ID site

My bowl designs are unique; I make them to please myself and I find it joyful that they sometimes please others as well. All of the colors are the natural wood colors, always protected by a multi-layer polyurethane finish that contains an ultraviolet blocker so as to stop or at least drastically retard the color changes that sunlight causes in some woods.
