Artist Biography

I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, surrounded by hardwood forests of a wide variety of species. I was introduced to wood turning by my father prior to his passing and inherited his lathe, tools and wood supply. I began turning in earnest in 2005 when I was able to develop a shop in my home. I am largely self-taught, but have been fortunate to have had classes both at Arrowmont, in Tennessee, and at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. I am a member of the AAW and one of the founders of our local AAW chapter Superiorland Woodturners, where I have served as Treasurer, board member, and currently, Program Chairman. I primarily use local figured woods such as burls, Curly Maple, and Birds Eye Maple, but use others, including exotics, as well.

I turn many categories of objects including bowls, vases, platters, boxes and wall hangings I have found wood turnings to be a wonderful "canvas" upon which color and texture amplify the patterns already in the wood, so most of my pieces have some form of embellishment. When dying my pieces, I usually add several layers of color and like to add metallic powders and crushed stone when I can. They are all unique, one of a kind pieces of art.

My work is shown in several galleries in Michigan: Zero Degrees Gallery, Marquette; Nook and Cranny Gallery, Ishpeming; the Paige Wiard Gallery in Calumet and the Bier gallery in Charlevoix. I have had pieces accepted in national and local juried shows, where they have won awards. I will always consider myself a student of woodturning, as there is always so much that can be done and so many new ideas to explore.
